Mother’s Day is not just the ‘mother of all mail days’ as proclaimed by Jerry Seinfeld’s arch nemesis, Newman. It’s Mother’s Day! Our day to celebrate our moms and show gratitude for everything they have done, and continue to do, for us. I went around the office and asked some of my co-workers to share with me how their moms helped nurture their love of science and arts.
My mom, Peggy, wasn’t allowed to take physics at the Catholic school in 1957 because she would have been the only girl. The principal, a nun, called her in when she signed up and told her it would have been unseemly to be the only female! Her parents didn’t make a fuss because whatever the nuns said was accepted without question.
(By the way, she had the highest average in the math classes she took with the same boys.)
My mother, Lois, has always been my rock and encouraged me to further my love of math and science by going to undergrad for Plastics Engineering. She was there for me with words of wisdom or just letting me know she has faith in me. I could not ask for a better Mom. Here is a picture from last October when we went to the Blake Shelton concert.
My mom, Mary Dorothy Munroe, taught me always to have an inquiring mind and never to let something go by without understanding it.
My mom, Carmella, has always had a love for the arts. Whenever my brother and I would complain about being bored, her reply was always: “Read a book, draw a picture, write a story.” She made sure that when we visited a new city during our summer vacations, art museums and galleries were always part of the plan. So, when I told her and my dad that I wanted to attend the University of the Arts and pursue a career in design, she didn’t think twice. Although I do recall her saying,
“I don’t care what you study, just as long as you don’t end up living in my basement the rest of your life.”
From all of us at McDAY, we wish all moms, sisters, grandmas, aunts, and friends a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Philly’s own, The Intruders, said it best when they sang:
I’ll always love my mama
She’s my favorite girl”
And we couldn’t agree more!
