You know you are a certain age when you ask someone if they remember “Where’s the Beef?” ad campaign and they smile. If you are too young to remember it, check it out here; it still cracks me up:
The woman in the famous Wendy’s commercial was Clara Peller, who was 81 when the commercial aired. The fast food chain saw a 31 percent rise in sales after the ad.
My kids are used to my sarcastic remark “…And they say advertising doesn’t work” when I am saying “NO!” to their impassioned, script-perfect ad delivery for some cell phone, game or restaurant. I have street cred after all, having actually worn a 100% polyester brown-orange-yellow striped dress to work at, not Wendy’s, but Burger King. Those were the days when they made it mandatory for employees to know how to sing the song “Have it Your Way.” Seriously. (It is important to note that I was placed up at the front counter after only 2 days of fry basket training because I was nerdy and cute; it was definitely not for my singing voice.) The company began the “Have it your way campaign” in 1974. Burger King dumped the campaign after 40 years in favor of a new slogan – “Be your way.”
